Peter of Alcántara

Peter of Alcántara
(1499–1562)
   Saint and Order Founder.
Peter was born of a noble family in Alcántara, Spain. He was educated in Salamanca and he joined the Observantist Franciscans in 1515. From 1538 until 1541 he was Provincial of the Extremaduran province of St Gabriel and he was known for his austere interpretation of the Rule. In 1541, he retired to a hermitage and established a group of communities. In 1557, he founded the convent of El Pedroso del Acém which was to become the first congregation of the new Alcantarine order, the Spanish Discalced Franciscans. He was well known as a spiritual director and he greatly encouraged St teresa of avila in her reform of the Carmelites. He was also supposedly the author of the Tratado de la Oración y Meditación, which went through many editions. However, some scholars have attributed it to luis of granada. He was canonised little more than a hundred years after his death and today he is the patron saint of Brazil.
